Chinese Slang for the Fall !

秋天(qiū tiān , autumn) is such a beautiful season. The colors are warm and vibrant, adding blankets of life and variety to the departing summer. In this post, let’s take a look at five Chinese idioms about the Fall season.

1、一叶知秋 (yí yè zhī qiū)

As we know, 秋( qiū) means autumn or fall. Here, 叶(yè) means leaf, and you might remember that知( zhī) means to know. Thus, this idiom literally means “with the falling of one leaf one knows the coming of autumn,” but is also used figuratively to describe how a small sign can indicate a much greater trend.

E.g.
A: I’ve heard that he can forecast things in future.
听说他能够预知未来。(tīngshuō tā nénggòu yùzhī wèilái 。)
B:That’s because he knows well that the falling of one leaf heralds the autumn.
那是因为他善于一叶知秋。(nàshì yīnwèi tā shànyú yíyèzhīqiū 。)

2、春华秋实 (chūn huá qiū shí)

This idiom literally means “spring’s glorious flowers, autumn’s solid fruits,” and figuratively means literary talent and moral integrity or the flying of time.

E.g.

These old buildings witness the flying of time.

这些老建筑见证了多少春华秋实。

(zhèxiē lǎojiànzhù jiànzhèng le duōshǎo chū huáqiūshí 。)

3、秋高气爽 (qiū gāo qì shuǎng)

This idiom literally describes how an autumn sky is clear and an autumn air is crisp.

E.g.

We went for an outing on a crisp fall day.

我们在一个秋高气爽的日子去远足了. (wǒmen zài yígè qiūgāoqìshuǎng de rìzi qù yuǎn zú le。)

4、秋收冬藏 (qiū shōu dōng cáng)

This literally refers to the harvesting of grain in autumn, and the storing of grain in winter afterwards.

E.g.

Only if you plough the field in spring and till it in summer, can you get harvest in autumn and store in winter.

只有春耕夏耘才能秋收冬藏。(zhǐyǒu chūngēngxiàyún cái néng qiūshōudōngcáng。)

5、一层秋雨一层凉 (yì céng qiū yǚ yì céng liáng)

This is a Chinese proverb which means the more it rains in autumn, the colder it will be in winter.

E.g.

The temperature dropped down after the rain.

A:昨天下完雨后又降温了.( zuótiān xià wán yǔ hòu yòu jiàngwēn le)

It is getting cooler with each autumn shower.

B:是啊,一层秋雨一层凉.(shì a, yì céng qiū yǚ yì céng liáng)

Hope you have a prosperous autumn!
